Mizizi Grassroots Journalists Trained

Pamoja Trust facilitated a three-day training of citizen journalists in Mombasa between the 20th and the 22nd of May 2015. The citizen journalist (Mizizi News) is a concept that was developed to facilitate community members to tell exciting stories from the settlements, especially those that the mainstream media is not able to.

The training exercise was therefore geared at imparting writing and photography skills that would enable the participants to capture and document stories that could be relayed through a variety of media, including the mainstream media. Ultimately, these skills would enable them to earn a livelihood from the work.

The training is Mombasa is part of an on-going process that seeks to establish grassroots journalists in each of the Counties where Pamoja Trust works. The training focused on the devolution theme and its impact. During the training, each participant was assigned a topic of their choice and was expected to submit the first drafts within two weeks after the training. The team was also tasked to set up social media pages, through which some of the stories and photos could be posted.
